VAT Verification
Taxbit is integrated with VIES, a search engine maintained by the European Commission that retrieves results from national VAT databases in real-time. Our platform checks each VAT number and VAT country in the system against those national databases when sufficient information is available to complete the request. Taxbit also periodically re-checks this information throughout the year to help keep it current and accurate.
Taxbit displays the result of this check as the VAT Status throughout the Taxbit Dashboard. These results are also available in CSV reports and via API so users can review the information in bulk and identify records that may require follow-up.
Please note: If the VIES system happens to run into any issues, we will retry the checks every 15 minutes for up to 12 hours until we get a valid response back from them. Otherwise, we have a periodic checker which runs once a day and re-verifies anything that was validated >30 days ago.
Finding the Results
You can review VAT Status information in a few different places within the Dashboard:
- VAT Verification Status Reports
- For more information on the available reports and accessing these reports, see:
- Account-level review

Reviewing the Results
See below for the various statuses that may be displayed based on the VIES response.
|
Status |
Definition |
|
Valid |
This result is returned by VIES when the record matches the national VAT database. |
|
Invalid |
This may mean the VAT number does not exist, has not been activated for intra-EU transactions, or its registration has not yet been finalized. |
If VIES returns an Invalid result for a VAT number that you believe is correct, you can request verification with your local tax office. In some cases, an additional registration for EU cross-border transactions may be required, and updates are not always reflected immediately in national databases or in VIES.
