VAT Format Validation

Taxbit can evaluate whether a VAT number matches the expected format for the selected jurisdiction. This is a syntax or shape check for character count, character type, and overall structure.

Syntax validation gives your team earlier visibility into potentially incorrect identifiers across collection methods. This can improve data quality, support remediation efforts, and increase confidence before downstream reporting activities.

For example, a value may be flagged if it:

  • Has too many or too few characters.
  • Uses the wrong character type for that jurisdiction.
  • Does not match the expected jurisdiction-specific pattern.

Finding the Results

You can review the TIN format results for a given account directly within the Dashboard. See below for more details on how to access these results.

Reviewing the Results

  • A valid format result means the identifier matches the expected format for VATs issued in that jurisdiction.
  • An invalid format result means the identifier does not match the expected format rules for that jurisdiction.

Please note: Taxbit does not block SDK submissions or form generation solely because a VAT number fails a syntax check. Users are allowed to proceed while the issue is surfaced as a warning for review and remediation.

Important Considerations

Format validation is not the same as confirming that an identifier is registered with a tax authority or belongs to a specific person or entity.

This is important because Taxbit supports multiple identifier-validation workflows. VAT verification is a separate process that checks a VAT number and member state against VIES, the European Commission system that retrieves results from national VAT databases.
