State Reporting

When you approve a filing in the Taxbit Dashboard, Taxbit submits the federal filing and any required state filings for the approved population. Depending on the state, the state filing may be submitted through the Combined Federal/State Filing (CF/SF) program or directly to the state tax authority.

State reporting requirements vary by state, form type, filing method, and whether state tax was withheld. Certain states require state reporting to be completed whenever a federal filing is required. For other states, direct reporting is only required to the extent withholding was performed.

Taxbit monitors state filing requirements and updates the filing process as those requirements change.

For steps on how to approve a filing, please refer to the following guide: How to Approve Forms for Filing

Preparing State-Related Information

Example: Form 1099-NEC

  • State (Box 6): The state associated with the reported income or withholding.
  • State tax withheld (Box 5): The amount of state income tax withheld, if applicable.
  • Payer's state number (Box 6): The payer's state identification number, if applicable.
  • State income (Box 7): The amount of income attributable to the state.

Please note the following when preparing your information:

  • You may leave the state-related fields blank if withholding was not performed.
  • When provided, the amount included in the State Income field must equal the Total Income reported on the Form 1099.
  • The state field is required when state tax was withheld or when the income is attributable to a state different from the account owner's address state. State income is required when the state field is populated.
  • If income is attributable to multiple states, provide a separate form-data row for each state.

For the complete list of data requirements for a particular form type, please refer to the following guide: Data Requirements: Overview

Important considerations

  • State deadlines may differ from federal deadlines. Review the applicable state deadlines and approve the filing in time.
  • State reporting may apply even when federal thresholds or requirements differ. Review your state reporting obligations for each form type and reporting year.
  • Requirements can change. Confirm the current requirements for the state, form type, and reporting year before filing.
