Curing Documentation User Guide
Use this guide when a tax documentation record has a curable issue and you have already reviewed supporting documentation from the customer. Curing documentation should only be used when the issue is actually curable, i.e. that the end user is not required to resubmit the documentation themselves.
Please note: The Tax Manager role is required to resolve issues and download PDFs from the Tax Documentation page. Support Users can review records, but they cannot take remediation actions.
For additional information on the Tax Documentation page, please refer to the following guide: Tax Documentation Page
When to Use Curing Documentation
In general, Taxbit currently supports two remediation paths for Form W-8 issues:
- Request a new tax document when the issue requires the customer to resubmit updated information.
- Resolve a curable issue after you have reviewed acceptable curing documentation or otherwise completed the necessary review.
Common examples where a new submission may be more appropriate include:
- Expired forms
- U.S. permanent address issues
- Certain change in circumstances scenarios
Common examples where curing documentation may be appropriate include:
- U.S. indicia
- Some PO Box or care-of address scenarios
- Some treaty mismatch scenarios
Acceptable Curing Documentation
Acceptable curing documentation depends on the customer type and the issue being reviewed.
For Entities
Examples of acceptable documentation include:
- Government business registry information
- Articles of incorporation
- Other trustworthy third-party documents
Examples that are not acceptable include:
- Applications for registration that cannot be verified as approved.
For Individuals
Examples of acceptable documentation include:
- Government identification or documentation, such as a tax assessment, that lists the individual's address
- Bank statements
- Other trustworthy third-party documents
Examples that are not acceptable include:
- Statements or documents provided directly by the user, including tax returns.
Additional Review Criteria
When reviewing curing documentation, confirm that:
- The name matches the name on Line 1 of the submitted Form W-8.
- The document is current and not expired.
- If the documentation is being used to support an address on the Form W-8, the address matches the permanent address on the form.
- If the documentation is being used to resolve U.S. indicia, the jurisdiction of tax residence shown in the curing documentation matches the non-U.S. jurisdiction listed as the customer's permanent address on the updated Form W-8.
How to Resolve a Curable Issue in the Dashboard
Step 1: From the left navigation menu, select Tax Documentation.
Step 2: Use search and filters as needed, then locate the specific documentation record you want to review and then select the “View Details” icon from the right.
Please note: that the table is document-level, not account-owner-level. The same account owner may appear more than once if they have multiple document types on file.

Step 3: From the drawer, review the following:
- Submission data
- Treaty claim details, when applicable
- Open issues or warnings
- Submission history

Step 4: Decide whether the issue should be resolved or resubmitted, then select “Resolve” to resolve the curable documentation, or “Request” to request new documentation.
- Use Resolve issues only when:
- The issue is curable, and
- You have completed the necessary review, including any review of curing documentation
- Use Request resubmission instead when the existing document is no longer acceptable and a new form is required.
Step 5: Once resolved, the record updates within the Tax Documentation workflow.
Please note: Resolved issues can be reopened later if follow-up review shows the issue still exists or the issue was resolved in error. Historical submissions remain available in submission history, and you can download PDFs for supported document types when needed.
