B-Notice Page
Contents
Description
The B-Notice page gives tax and operations teams one place to review and manage B-Notice records across their account population.
A B-Notice, also called a backup withholding notice, is associated with an IRS CP2100 or CP2100A notice. These notices identify name and taxpayer identification number (TIN) information that did not match IRS records on a filed information return.
From the B-Notice page, you can review records by tax year, identify which accounts require a B-Notice, review the available record details, export filtered results, and resolve notices when the required documentation has been received.
Please note the following:
- The B-Notice page is available to customers with B-Notice support included in their contract.
- A Tax Manager has access to the B-Notice workflow, including file uploads, record review, TIN reveal when permitted, exports, and manual resolution.
- A Support User has read-only access. Support Users can view B-Notice records and download available reports and exports, but cannot upload files, reveal TINs, or resolve notices.
- The B-Notice page is a workflow and tracking tool. Coordinate any downstream backup withholding activity with the appropriate payment, finance, or tax operations process.
- Please reach out to your account team if you have questions about access, file processing, or the B-Notice workflow.

How to Access
Upload B-Notice files
Before records can be reviewed from the B-Notice page, B-Notice files need to be uploaded from the Ingest Data page. You can upload either a CP2100 file or historical B-Notice records. Please follow the steps outline below to upload the necessary files:
Before you Begin:
- CP2100 files must be pipe-delimited .txt files.
- If the selected tax year already has a CP2100 file on record, Taxbit displays a warning before the upload proceeds. Confirm the upload only if you want the new file to update the existing B-Notice records for that year.
- The historical file must include the required fields defined in the historical B-Notice template, including the Account ID, tax year, notice date, First or Second B-Notice type, resolution information, and mailing information when applicable.
Step 1: From the Ingest Data page, select B-Notice as the data type.
Step 2: Select CP2100 or Historical B-Notice as the file type depending on what you need to upload. For CP2100s, select the tax year the notice is associated to.
Step 3: Upload the file.
Step 4: Once the file is uploaded, it will undergo a quick validation process. If the file is fully validated, it will upload valid files automatically. If there is invalid data, the file will need to be reviewed and corrected before being re-uploaded.
