IRS US TIN Matching

Taxbit is fully integrated with the IRS US TIN Matching e-Service API. Our platform automatically checks the Name and US TIN combination provided against the IRS database when sufficient information is available to complete the request. The system will also periodically re-check these combinations throughout the year to ensure statuses are up to date and accurate.

The results from the IRS typically take 1 - 2 hours after a name, and US TINs have been ingested to the Taxbit Dashboard; however, it could take up to 24 hours, and there are instances where results may take longer. The IRS has limitations around the number of times you can send the same name and/or TIN within a 24-hour period. They do this in order to prevent users from abusing the system to identify someone’s TIN. As a result, checking TINs for common names (e.g., John Smith) can be delayed by several days.

Taxbit also offers a Real-Time TIN check service that offers results for individual checks within 2 - 3 seconds. For more information, please refer to this article: Real-Time IRS US TIN Matching

Reviewing the Results

See below for the various statuses that may be displayed based on the IRS response.

Status

Definition

Valid

The Name/US TIN combination matches with the IRS database. On certain reports, this may appear as Valid SSN Match, Valid EIN Match, or Valid SSN/EIN Match to show which IRS database returned the match.

Mismatch

The US TIN exists in the IRS database, however, the associated name is different.

TIN Not Issued

The US TIN provided has not been issued and is not included in the IRS database. It is possible there is a delay from when the TIN was issued, to when it appears on this list.

Non-US

Non-US TINs will not be sent to the IRS for verification. For Non-US TINs, our system will perform a format check, however, there is not an equivalent system to check Non-US TINs with the various authorities.

For more details, please refer to this article: TIN Format Validation

Invalid Data

The Name and/or US TIN provided is not sufficient to send to the IRS for matching purposes. The name field must contain one or more characters supported by the IRS TIN Matching e-Service, and the US TIN must be 9 non-repeating, non-consecutive digits.

Pending

The Name/TIN combination has been sent to the IRS for matching and Taxbit is awaiting a response.

Please note: Taxbit does not block SDK submissions or form generation solely because a non-US TIN fails IRS US TIN Matching. Users are allowed to proceed while the issue is surfaced as a warning for review and remediation.
